Press Release
PHOENIX – The Arizona State Senate Democratic Caucus released the following statement regarding the recent theft that took place within the Senate and the statement by law enforcement.
“The premature and misleading communications from the Senate majority, regarding the incident, have created the perfect environment for conspiracy theories to flourish. This fuels misinformation to spread online regarding the security of our government building and election integrity. It is deeply disappointing that anyone would use this moment to whip up their base and cause undo confusion.
Any attempt to try and tie the individual charged here with the Senate Democratic Caucus or Senator Juan Mendez is unfounded. No one is able to speak to Walter Ringfield’s motives in either case of theft, except for Walter Ringfield himself. For anyone, including official channels of the State Senate to speculate or feed additional misinformation regarding this incident is unbecoming of any public official.
We thank law enforcement for looking into this and will continue to cooperate as needed.”
The Arizona Department of Public Safety released the following public statement:
“On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, an Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) trooper assigned to the Capitol District received a report of a theft that occurred at the Arizona Senate Building in Phoenix.
Troopers reviewed Senate security footage, which showed a suspect entered a restricted area of the building and removed numerous items from a security staff member’s desk. The stolen items included challenge coins and other desk accessories.
Investigators identified the suspect as 27-year-old Walter Alphonso Jamel Ringfield Jr., of Phoenix.
A search warrant was ultimately served on Ringfield’s Phoenix residence, and detectives recovered the stolen items.
Ringfield faces charges including trespassing, theft, and burglary.”
