Press Release
PHOENIX – Earlier this month, Jocelynn Rojo Carranza, an 11-year-old girl in Texas committed suicide after students at her school started bullying her and threatening to call immigration services to take her parents away. Senator Catherine Miranda (LD11) released the following statement:
“Our children are not born hateful—they are taught to be hateful and to fear things they don’t understand. Racist policies do not just affect our laws; it affects how individuals treat one another, and we are starting to see that play out. We saw it with the ASU students who encouraged their classmates to report other students to ICE and we’re seeing it now with the death of Jocelynn Rojo Carranza.
Jocelynn was bullied by her classmates who insinuated that her family was in the U.S. illegally. According to her mom, the school knew about the bullying and did nothing. Her death is absolutely heartbreaking and never should have happened.
This tragedy was preventable but until Republicans acknowledge the true consequences of their actions and decide to prioritize real solutions to address our broken immigration system, we will continue to see stories like this one.”
