Press Release

PHOENIX – Yesterday, four people were killed and nine people were injured in a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. It is at least the 45th school shooting in 2024 and the deadliest this year. Senator Flavio Bravo (LD26) released the following statement regarding the ongoing gun violence epidemic in the United States.

“My heart goes out to all of those who were affected by yesterday’s shooting. To all the families who lost a loved one, to those who were physically injured, and the many others who were traumatized as a result of this heartbreaking event. This is a uniquely American tragedy. The United States is the only country that allows our students to live in fear while at school – a place that should be safe space for them to learn and grow. It is the only country that allows parents to continuously send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive due to gun violence. It is the only country that forces its students, teachers and school staff to go through active shooter trainings instead of passing commonsense gun safety laws that would protect them. It doesn't have to be this way, and it is outrageous that we continue to do nothing to protect our schools. The Arizona Senate Democratic Caucus is ready today to put an end to tragedies like this and make sure Arizona never has to endure a tragedy like this.

We have policies ready to go right now that would require safe storage so a 14-year-old could never access an AR-15, allow pediatricians to talk about gun safety as it is the leading cause of death among young people in America, and remove guns from those convicted of domestic violence.

The time to act is now. We owe it to our young people.”
